Cacti

Our curriculum called for drawing a desert scene in Art Wednesday. That sounded a little bit boring, so I chose to construct something I've always wanted to do...succulent terrariums! Being a bit pricey ($35) once you add it all up, I had the kids make one big one and the other families brought a small one home in a mason jar. Here's how we did it:

1. Place small rocks in a wide open mouth glass bowl.
2. Pour a level of cactus soil.
3. Place and plant succulents in soil.
4. Pour sand around the plants.

Before our art class we read A Desert Scrapbook, a wonderful book with nice watercolor paintings of desert life. The kids really loved it! They were so fascinated with the cacti.
