Emerging Literacy

This is one jewel I randomly found at the library that I am really enjoying. Emerging Literacy: Young Children Learn to Read and Write by D.S. Strickland and L.M. Morrow gives great ideas for gently helping young ones to learn to read and write. Not only do the authors give book lists and hands-on activities, but a sample of teachers do as well. Some of the ideas I jotted down and hope to implement this year are: Weekend news (writing down what they will be doing or did do on the weekend...a fun way to expose words to them), Me Museum (child dictates or writes about himself with use of poster, favorite books, etc.), and the rest are crafts I will leave for future posts.
